STATEMENT: [Augustus Robert Seymour] at the Q.S. at Beaumaris charged with stealing a watch the property of [Thomas Hughes]. A. R. S describes in detail the unfortunate circumstances prior to his taking the watch. Says that he left his wife after revelations about her financial affairs and travelled to Boston, Hitchin and London in search of work. Unable to find any, he pledged his watch in London for the fare to Dublin. There he sold his spare clothing and few items of jewelry, the proceeds of which he was robbed on a train to Bray. He sold his scarf pin for the return fare to Holyhead. There he was shown to a lodging-house where he shared a bed with T.H. Next morning T.H. left early leaving his watch hanging on a nail at the end of the bed which A.R.S., through desperation, was driven to take.
