Before leaving for France he visited his grandmother [Henrietta Cavendish Grey (1737-1827), Dowager Countess of Stamford] in London. Describes a visit to the theatre in Covent Garden. He had an unpleasant crossing from Dover to Calais aboard the Arrow Steam Packet. "My head turned, and I encreased the briny ocean with the contents of my breakfast... I dare not open my eyes until we could see something more substantial than waves". Describes the landing and finding accommodation in Calais. After discussions with his courier, he has considered altering his route to take in the south of France after Paris, in case war breaks out between France and Spain. He asks for news from home.
