'Environs of London / Surrey' [hand-labelled on outer case]. Linen-backed folding map (scale 1 inch to 1 mile; measures 66 cm x 99.5 cm), in two parts, in hardboard slip case. Ink inscription by Samuel Butler in margin of Western part reads: 'S. Butler - 15. Clifford's Inn, London E.C. a reward will be paid on the return of this map to its owner.' Ink inscription in margin of Eastern part reads: 'The finder of this map is requested to return it to the owner. If rich he will be thanked, if poor rewarded. S. Butler 15. Clifford's Inn Fleet Street London E.C.' Red lines marked on both parts of the map show Butler's extensive travels in the region.
