Alms Houses, Ysbyty Ifan

Scope and Content

The Alms Houses in Ysbyty Ifan were built in 1880, replacing six founded by Captain Richard Vaughan in the 1600s. On the side of the Alms Houses is a plaque on which is carved: 'This Alms House was erected at the charge of Capt. Richard Vaughan one of the family of Pant-Glase and one of the Poor Knights of Windsor who also by his Will gave the use of two hundred pounds for ever to maintain six poor aged men of this parish. He died June 5 1700.'

Under this is carved: 'The above stone for more than a century marked the front of six ancient tenements adjoining Tyn-Y-Porth in the Manor of Tir Evan. In extreme decay they were sold by order of the Charity Commissioners and taken down in 1885.'

[RV was made a Poor Knight in 1663 after losing his sight in the Civil War. Today the Poor Knights are called the Military Knights].
