Plas Mawr

Scope and Content

Plas Mawr was built by the Elizabethan adventurer Robert Wynne. He was the third son of Sir John Wynne of Gwydir and he came into possession of a large parcel of land within the walls of Conwy. Here he built Plas Mawr, and lived there with his wife Dorothy who was the Grandmother of Archbishop John Williams and the Widow of William Williams. Tourists now enter Plas Mawr through what used to be the gatehouse. The original front faced Crown Lane and the doors still have massive drawbars by which which they were secured.
