Bundles of Petty Cash Vouchers

Scope and Content

The series contains bundles of petty cash vouchers recording expenditure on telegrams, telephone charges, postage and receipt stamps, the carriage of goods, travelling expenses, subscriptions to newspapers and journals, refreshments, and sundry office expenses such as cleaning bills and purchases of small items of equipment and stationery.

From 1897 until 1917 each bundle contains vouchers for a six-month period, thereafter for a whole year. The vouchers were individually folded and labelled on the outside, although several related vouchers, such as invoices from a single creditor, were often pinned or clipped together and then folded. From 1901 until 1917 (EGR14/57/6-36), and from 1937 to 1939 (the vouchers for 1933-1936 are missing), the vouchers were numbered sequentially in red ink for auditing purposes. Bundles EGR14/57/51-53 are tied together with string inserted through holes punched in each voucher, and the vouchers in EGR14/57/48-50 also exhibit punch holes: it may have been the practice in the 1930s to hold the current year's vouchers in a ring binder.
