Letter

Scope and Content

From Roger Eykyn agent to Lord Vane [William Holles, 2nd Viscount Vane], to John Jackson esq [solicitor to Mary Countess of Stamford]. Lord Vane has felled timber to repair the roof of Caverswall Castle [co. Staffs], but seeks approval for an exchange of seasoned timber.

[G.E.C. Complete peerage, vol. 12, pt. II, p. 215, incorrectly states that Vane "inherited the Caverswall estate from his mother but sold it about 1759 to Booth Grey [son of Mary Countess of Stamford], retaining apparently a life interest". Lady Stamford's will (EGR1/8/12/4) states that she purchased the estate in 1759, subject to life interests to Lord Vane and his wife, to be held in trust for herself for life, with reversionary life interests to the 4th Earl of Stamford, and then to their son Booth Grey. The letter thus relates to Vane's rights as life tenant to fell timber. The letter was apparently forwarded by Jackson to Lady Stamford; for a copy of her reply see EGR3/7/1/12/4 below; see also EGR1/8/12/4, EGR3/7/1/4/10 and EGR3/7/1/4/18 for references to the Caverswall estate.]

Dated at: Caverswall Castle.

Endorsed: "F'm Ld. Vane's Agent & Answer 14 July 1765" (in the hand of Mary Countess of Stamford).
