Administrative / Biographical History

John Egerton was only 6 years old when his father Thomas died, so the estate at Tatton was presumably run by his mother Hester with the assistance of stewards and estate officials until he came of age. In 1707 he married Elizabeth Barbour, an advantageous match which established the financial standing of the family and which made the link between the Egertons and the wealthy and influential Hill family: John Egerton became Samuel Hill's brother-in-law. During 1715-16 John was responsible for carrying out extensive alterations to the New Hall at Tatton. He died in 1724, leaving Elizabeth to bring up their 5 children.
