Papers of the Arbuthnott Family

The contents of this small collection provide useful background information to anyone interested in further research into the Arbuthnott family and lands. It compliments the two large and several other minor deposits of original records which have been made by the family (see Related Units of Description, below).

Contents include a typescript copy of Archibald Mason's Notes on the Kirk and Parish of Arbuthnott, compiled c. 1903 - 1913 (original MS deposited in the University archives: GB 231 MS 2246). The material in it draws from a variety of sources including the Kirk Session records and the Old and New Statistical Accounts, in giving a detailed account of the history of parish. A section of 33 pages concerns the Arbuthnott family and describes its development from the early 13th century through contemporary and later accounts and record sources, concluding in 1682, with the death of the 2nd Viscount.

Other material deposited here includes c. 29 pages of genealogical notes, compiled by Rev. William Arbuthnott and David G. Arbuthnott, tracing the family history from Dougal Seton in 1060 until 1908, and concluding with notes on the spelling of the family name, and its arms and motto; and a transcript of the 15th century Arbuthnott Missal (a copy of Alexander Arbuthnott's Continuation of the Genealogie of the Noble Family of Arbuthnott, which draws upon the Arbuthnott Missal is deposited in the University (GB 231 MS 848) - see Related Units of Description for further details).

Rev William Arbuthnott was one of seven children of Jane Ogilvy and James Arbuthnott of Invernettie, Peterhead. He married Julia Helen Ogilvy Stuart, only child of Captain Kenneth Bruce Stuart and his wife Julia Clemintina Ogilvy. They had three children, Dorothea May Ogilvy, Clemintina Julia Ogilvy and Gavin Campbell.

David G. Arbuthnott is also descended from the Invernettie, or, Peterhead Arbuthnotts. His great grandfather left Peterhead to found the family business in Edinburgh, of which city he became the Lord Provost and was made Baronet in 1823.

The family is a branch of the Arbuthnott family of Arbuthnott, Kincardineshire. This report contains short but informative historical account of the family, and a description of the family papers (now deposited in the University: GB 231 MS 2764).

The papers were collated by Rev. William Arbuthnott and David G. Arbuthnott, and were deposited in the University Library in 1976, by David G. Arbuthnott and his cousin, Mrs Catherine Taylor, MP. Catherine Taylor is a grand-daughter of Rev. William Arbuthnot. Her mother, Alma Arbuthnott, was born at Arbuthnott House in Peterhead, now believed to be the Town Hall.
