Rev William Arbuthnott was one of seven children of Jane Ogilvy and James Arbuthnott of Invernettie, Peterhead. He married Julia Helen Ogilvy Stuart, only child of Captain Kenneth Bruce Stuart and his wife Julia Clemintina Ogilvy. They had three children, Dorothea May Ogilvy, Clemintina Julia Ogilvy and Gavin Campbell.
David G. Arbuthnott is also descended from the Invernettie, or, Peterhead Arbuthnotts. His great grandfather left Peterhead to found the family business in Edinburgh, of which city he became the Lord Provost and was made Baronet in 1823.

The papers were collated by Rev. William Arbuthnott and David G. Arbuthnott, and were deposited in the University Library in 1976, by David G. Arbuthnott and his cousin, Mrs Catherine Taylor, MP. Catherine Taylor is a grand-daughter of Rev. William Arbuthnot. Her mother, Alma Arbuthnott, was born at Arbuthnott House in Peterhead, now believed to be the Town Hall.
