While correspondence received from Butterfield & Swire in the London Office was filed and preserved, letters from other correspondents have not survived in any comprehensive series for the Nineteenth Century and only prior to the First World War were bound Letter Books, arranged by correspondent, introduced. The correspondence which has survived covers a wide range of topics and includes letters from most of John Swire & Sons chief business associates, including Holt's and Scott's but rarely in any long series.
