Administrative / Biographical History

Originally named the Manchester Society of Radiography, the Manchester and District Radiographic Society was most likely to have been established c.1932, although the exact date is unknown. It provided scientific and social contacts for radiologists, radiographers, members of the "X-ray trade" and hospital physicists. The Society held monthly meetings, usually in the X-ray department, and later the Clinical Lecture Theatre, of Manchester Royal Infirmary or on occasions at another hospital in the district, including Bolton Infirmary and Liverpool Royal Infirmary. At the monthly meetings, addresses and talks were given on matters concerned with radiography and the general business of the Society was discussed. The Society also held an annual dinner and dance. In addition to the monthly meetings, the Society also held separate Council meetings every one to two months. The Society was responsible was the establishment of the Manchester School of Radiography.

During the Second World War the Society's meetings were drastically reduced and it found itself in a state of suspended animation as the outbreak of hostilities removed many of the its members to more serious and hazardous activities. The Society went into abeyance from which it never emerged and, as a result, at a meeting on July 22nd 1946 it was decided to bring the Society to a close. What remaining finances it had were wound up and the balance of the Society's accounts was used to institute a Manchester and District Radiographic Society Prize for students of the Manchester School of Radiography.
