Livre d'artiste publications and proof sheets

Scope and Content

A series which is predominantly comprised of proof sheets (a mixture of both text and illustration, some inscribed to Strachan) from livre d'artiste publications. The texts vary from classic works to recent and contemporary writing, and the illustrations embrace a wide range of artistic styles. Artists represented include Roger Bezombes, Robert Couturier, Albert Flocon, Edouard Goerg, Abram Krol, André Minaux, Pierre Tal-Coat and Raoul Ubac; there are also two items from publications by the poet Pierre Lecuire, who published much of his poetry in livre d'artiste form. Three complete publications are also included: books by Krol, Noël Marsault, and Irish writer George Moore; the latter is unillustrated and is not a livre d'artiste, but it was published by the Hours Press, Nancy Cunard's private press in Paris. The final item in the series is apparently a printer's sample sheet, which includes an unattributed piece of verse, 'Trois chevaux aigus...', some illustrations, and sample printings of musical scores.

Arrangement

Arrangement is largely based on Geoffrey Strachan's organisation of the material, which is alphabetical based predominantly on the name of the artist involved with each publication, but in some cases (e.g. where the artist is unknown) the name of the author of the text.
