Scope and Content
Administrative / Biographical History
Hayes continued his work and research on Gainsborough until his death in 2005. The last two projects he was engaged with were a research project for a catalogue of Gainsborough's 'fancy' pictures and the management of a catalogue raisonné project on Gainsborough's portraits, which was funded partly by Philip Mould and partly by the Paul Mellon Centre. The research for this latter project was initially undertaken by Hugh Belsey and Lindsey Stainton.
After Hayes's death, Hugh Belsey took over the work on both projects alone, and eventually published a two volume catalogue raisonné with the Paul Mellon Centre: Belsey, H. and Yarker, J. (contributor.) (2019) Thomas Gainsborough : the portraits, fancy pictures and copies after old masters. New Haven; London: Published for the Paul Mellon Centre for Studies in British Art by Yale University Press. [a copy is available in the Paul Mellon Centre Library, see URL below].
