John Bowes Morrell played an important role in the history of York. At age 17 he was apprenticed at Rowntree's Cocoa Manufacturers, and by 25 had become the director of the company.
He served as Lord Mayor in 1914 and again 1949-1950 and helped to found the University of York and the Borthwick Institute.
