Papers of George Stephen Elfer

Scope and Content

Items created and collected by Elfer, both of a personal and professional nature. Including, student education and military training notebooks, contains Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers (REME) materials for World War II. Many items relate to companies Elfer was employed by: Morgan Crucible Limited; Imperial Chemical Industries (ICI); and Metropolitan-Vickers Electrical Company. These are mainly technical or written works but the collection does include Morgan Crucible works photographs. A typedscript of Elfer's training and experience is available.

Administrative / Biographical History

Elfer was known in this country by his anglicized name but his birth name was Gyorgy Istvan, he was also known as Gheorghe Stefan. He was born in 1916 in Cluj-Napoca, Romania and died in the UK in 1997; he was a Fellow of IMechE and a member of Institution of Civil Engineers.

Educated at the Royal Joseph Technical University, Budapest, Hungary, Elfer completed his degree studies at Emmanuel College, Cambridge. He served a college apprenticeship with Metropolitan-Vickers Electrical Company (1937-1939) before employment in that firm's mechanical engineering department. Elfer's wartime service was with the Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers (REME). His progress from lieutenant to major included duties in the East Africa Command. Post-war, he worked for the ICI Dyestuffs Division, the Morgan Crucible Company and Morganite Carbon.
