24-hour catches: early Bwamba series

Scope and Content

Catch records titled Twenty four hour catch record, Yellow Fever Research Institute. Data recorded under subject headings include: Catch number; Date; Time started; Locality; Number of catchers; Bait hours; Hours LMT (includes hours of the day); Weather. Records capture the time of; the total number of species caught and weather conditions per catch from each platform level.

The catch records describe 24 hour mosquito catches taken from around Bwamba, Uganda. Catches made starting from ground level platforms and above. Fifteen catchers were used as bait. The catch environmental conditions are recorded including the vegetation, distances from banana plantations and structures.

  • Catch Series 070-071-072-073-074-075-076-077-078-079 during dry season at Monigo, Bwamba, Uganda, Feb-Mar 1945 (pp 18-70);
  • Catch Series 045-046-047-048-049-050-051-052-053-054 during wet season at Mamirimiri, Bwamba, Uganda, Jun-Jul 1944 (pp 124-186);

Catch Series 000-025 includes 15 individual 24-hour catches: Two catches made at Bubukwanga; One catch made at Bundinyana; Nine catches made at Kanyamwerina; One catch made at Kilara Swamp; One catch made at Nkisi River; and One catch made at Ntotoro. The results were published in The mosquitoes of Bwamba County, Uganda. II Biting activity with special reference to the influence of microclimateBulletin of Entomological Research, XXXVI, pp 33-73, 1945.

Catch Series 045-054, 060-069 and 070-079 consists of 10 catches made simultaneously in dense virgin rainforest of a mixed high-canopy type. The ground platform was stationed in the centre of the triangle formed by three tree units. Platforms occupied Erythrina excelsa tree at 22 and 44 feet; Ficus sp (parasitic) at 58 feet; Alstonia congensis at 82 feet.

Catch Series 040-044, 055-059, 070-079 consists of 10 catches made simultaneously in dense virgin rainforest of a mixed high-canopy type. The ground platform was stationed in the centre of the triangle formed by three tree units. Platforms occupied trees: Macaranga schweinfurthii at 16 feet; Cynometra alenandri at 31 feet; Mitragya stipulosa at 54 feet.
