Section III. Bound volumes

Scope and Content

Bound volumes constitute Section III of the Laing Collection with shelfmarks La.III. This long series of bound volumes includes copies of the scriptures and portions of the scriptures on vellum; breviaries and missals on vellum; treatises, discourses, sermons and notes on theological matters; and, treatises and notes on philosophical matters. There is historical, legal, and biographical material, and also letters. Within the series too there are some well known Scottish musical texts, poems, and the miniatures of Jacobean London in Michael van Meer's Stammboek. The Section also contains the Thorkelin Correspondence, being letters addressed to Grimur Jonsson Thorkelin.

Other Finding Aids

Handlists, H4; H5; H5.1; H5.2; and, H5.3. Handlists H4 and H5 refer to the 2 volumes of the Report on the Laing Manuscripts preserved in the University of Edinburgh (1914 and 1925) by the Historical Manuscripts Commission. Handlist H5.2 is The Stam Boek von den Michiel van Mer, by David Cuthbertson. Handlist H5.3 is the Thorkelin Correspondence being a list from a Ph.D. thesis submitted at Edinburgh (1972) by Miss E.H. Harvey Wood. Another important finding aid is the alphabetical Index to Manuscripts held at Edinburgh University Library, Special Collections and Archives. Additions to the typed slips in sheaf binders were made until 1987.
