Scope and Content

This collection comprises minutes, reports, briefing papers and correspondence of the European Commission Midwives Liaison Committee attended by representatives from the Royal College of Midwives (1979-1995), relating to the status and future of the midwifery profession and maternity services in the following countries: Belgium, Denmark, France, Germany, Italy, Finland, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Spain, the United Kingdom and Ireland, with particular references to the midwifery schools and the management of maternity hospitals.

Administrative / Biographical History

The initial constitutional meeting of the European Commission Midwives Liaison Committee took place on 18 February 1968.

The Midwives Liaison Committee comprising representative from each state within the European Commission, including Belgium, Denmark, France, Germany, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Spain, the United Kingdom and Ireland, was established to bring together the professional interests of midwives working from these countries.

Arrangement

The original order of material is retained, although where this is not possible the arrangement of files has been based on the functions and activities of the organisation as well as chronology, subject and the needs of users.

Permission is required for external access to records less than twenty years old. Also restrictions apply if material includes personal information of living individuals. All other records are open to research by appointment, Monday to Friday, 10am to 4pm. There is no record of the source or date of acquisition before this material was deposited under the terms of a collection care agreement at the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists in May 2011.
