Scope and Content
Administrative / Biographical History
The Evelyn Mary Eden Memorial Benevolent Fund was formed by the National Union of Trained Nurses 'for the benefit of past, present or future members', especially those that were either 'old or suffering' after the upheaval of the First World War.
After the National Union of Trained Nurses was dissolved in 1923, the interests of Evelyn Mary Eden Memorial Benevolent Fund were administered by the Bristol and Somerset Branch of the NUTN in coordination with the following trustees: Miss M. F. Rimmer, Miss E. L. C. Eden, Mr E. Burns Pye and Mr L. Hamilton Gault.
In 1947 the management of the Evelyn Mary Eden Memorial Benevolent Fund was taken over by the Royal College of Midwives (formally known as the Midwives Institute). The fund continued according to the terms of the original declaration. The only deviation from the previous policy was that whereas the previous committee distributed funds twice a year, the Royal College of Midwives made grants as the need arose.
The original order of material is retained, although where this is not possible the arrangement of files has been based on the functions and activities of the organisation as well as chronology, subject and the needs of users.
