Scope and Content

This collection comprises minutes of the International Relations Committee of the Royal College of Midwives (formally known as the Midwives Institute) (1946-1950), relating to improving maternity services, as well as the status, efficiency and working conditions of midwives working outside of the United Kingdom.

Administrative / Biographical History

The International Relations Committee of the Royal College of Midwives (formally known as the Midwives Institute), was established on 25 November 1946, in order to consider the organisational policy on issues affecting midwives that worked outside the United Kingdom. It was also involved in appointing and then receiving the reports of regional committees for areas, where extensive work was required to improve the status, efficiency and working conditions of midwives.

Meetings of the International Relations Committee took place on a quarterly basis and consisted of the President, Deputy President, the Honorary Treasurer, the Chairman and Deputy Chairman of the Council, the Chairman of the Executive Committee, plus three further members of the Council as well as the General Secretary and an Honorary Secretary.

Arrangement

The original order of material is retained, although where this is not possible the arrangement of files has been based on the functions and activities of the organisation as well as chronology, subject and the needs of users.

Permission is required for external access to records less than twenty years old. Also restrictions apply if material includes personal information of living individuals. All other records are open to research by appointment, Monday to Friday, 10am to 4pm. There is no record of the source or date of acquisition before this material was deposited under the terms of a collection care agreement at the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists in May 2011.
