Records of the Overseas Committee of the Royal College of Midwives

Scope and Content

This collection comprises minutes of the Overseas Committee of the Royal College of Midwives (1955-1932), relating to the recruitment, training and scholarships of foreign midwifery students working in the United Kingdom.

Administrative / Biographical History

By the end of the Second World War, the Royal College of Midwives had become a renowned training centre for midwives. As a result foreign midwifery students increasingly came to complete their training in the United Kingdom.

Meanwhile the International Confederation of Midwives was formed in 1955, in order to strengthen midwives associations and to advance the profession of midwifery globally.

In response to this, the Overseas Committee was established on 16 September 1955, to arrange placements in hospitals, as well as introductory training and financial support for these foreign midwifery students.

Meetings of the Overseas Committee were attended by two Honorary Officers and six members of the College, elected annually by the Council as well as representatives from external bodies and organisations, including the Teacher Training College Council, the British Medical Council and British Red Cross.
