Scott led two expeditions to the Antarctic, 1901-1904 and 1910-1913. During the former he made the first balloon ascent on the continent and sledged to a furthest south of 82°17'S on 30 December 1902 with Edward Wilson and Ernest Shackleton.

The second expedition saw him successfully attaining the South Pole on 17 January 1912, he and his four companions (Henry Bowers, Edgar Evans, Lawrence Oates and Edward Wilson) perished during the return journey.
