Scope and Content

Programmes for performances at Sadler’s Wells Theatre and for performances by companies based at Sadler’s Wells (at home or on tour). Programmes of other theatres managed by Sadler’s Wells are also included: the Lilian Baylis Theatre (a studio theatre at Sadler’s Wells) and the Peacock Theatre (on Portugal Street in London). Some Old Vic programmes are also included. Programmes for the following companies are included: Sadler’s Wells Ballet (formerly Vic-Wells Ballet, later the Royal Ballet): 1931 until the move to the Royal Opera House in 1946 (plus later performances given at Sadler’s Wells Theatre). Sadler’s Wells Theatre Ballet (later Royal Ballet touring company, Sadler’s Wells Royal Ballet, Birmingham Royal Ballet): 1946 to [1957?] when it became part of the Royal Ballet (later performances at Sadler’s Wells Theatre only are also included) Sadler’s Wells Opera: 1931 until 1974 (company moved to London Coliseum in 1968) Old Vic Shakespeare Company: 1931-1932 Many different companies visiting Sadler’s Wells on tour Programmes for Sadler’s Wells and its companies are also held in various other collections. The Royal Opera House has programmes for the Royal Ballet (former Sadler’s Wells Ballet). English National Opera (former Sadler’s Wells Opera) has its own programmes.
