Scope and Content

Mainly Mrs Addis recording her own and her husband's engagements with the YMCA, Society for the Diffusion of Christian and General Knowledge among the Chinese, Seaman's Mission Committee, Public School Education Committee, Library Committee and Little Slave Girls Committee and also domestic and social matters. Addis's entries mostly concern his family and social activities with infrequent references to his work.

JANUARY Mentions record half year for Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corporation (HSBC); request from the New York Life Insurance Company to join their board turned down for Addis by Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corporation (HSBC); 'Money is very short in the Bank and is causing great anxiety and worry.' 27.

FEBRUARY Daughter Susan born, 2; Addis lectures on 'The Daily Quotations of Exchange' to the YMCA.

MARCH New telephone in use at home; much trouble in office over the forgery of Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corporation (HSBC) banknotes and problems with H.M. Bevis in Shanghai and Mackintosh in Tientsin.

APRIL Continued troubles with staff and exchange.

JULY Many meetings with the Rev. Gilbert Walshe, George Lanning and other members of the Public School Education Committee.

SEPTEMBER Appointed Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corporation (HSBC) representative on the board of the Nanking Railway.
