Correspondence relating to The living curve

Scope and Content

Correspondence and associated papers relating to the planning and preparation of The living curve: letters to W.J. Strachan 1929-1979 (1984). Much of this material was generated by Christopher Hewett, who was the editor of the volume; when he died suddenly in December 1983, the editorial and design work on the book was virtually complete. Geoffrey Strachan took over as 'caretaker editor' to see the volume through to its final publication, so there is also a large file of his correspondence (which includes numerous letters and copy letters from Walter Strachan). Correspondents include many of the figures whose letters were published in the book as well as others who were approached as possible contributors of an introduction. Some of those represented include Kenneth Armitage, Edward Bawden, Charles Causley, Julien Gracq, Joan Hassall, Pierre Lecuire, Cecily Mackworth and Henry Moore. There is also correspondence with other publishers (including co-publishers Carcanet Press), printers and members of Hewett's family.
