Business and Economic Research Office

Scope and Content

Almost all of the papers listed here pre-date 1924 and so properly belong as a part of the section of the catalogue relating to B.S. Rowntree as Director and Acting Company Chairman. However they are listed separately here for ease of reference. The following represent part of a file series, probably formed by William Wallace, as personal assistant to Benjamin Rowntree. Many of the papers are marked with a filing stamp within which is entered the date (mostly 28 or 29 VI 1922), the file number and item number.

Administrative / Biographical History

The Business and Economic Research Office was not formally constituted as such until 1924, although William Wallace had been tentatively undertaking such work since joining the company as Benjamin Rowntree's personal assistant, in 1919. In 1924 Wallace became Business and Economic Research Secretary to the Finance Director.
