Copy of Letter [Extract]

Scope and Content

Photographic copy of an extract of a letter from Charles Wesley to [John Bennet]. He is stationed in this place [?London] until after Easter when he travels to Ludlow, Shropshire. Sarah is ill at the moment - 'If she leaves us shortly, I shall count her lucky'. She joins in sending love.

Bennet should send the names of the subscribers [to Charles's published hymns].

Charles is thinking of printing a small hymn book for the use of children. This is after repeated urging by J W. The price will be 4d or 6d. He has the Kingswood scholars particularly in mind although he hopes that it will prove of value to young and old alike. He means to publish it as long as he is assured beforehand of being able to pay the printer - 'an indispensible condition with me'. In order to help him to work this out, he must ask his friends to inform him how many copies they can sell. How many does Bennet think will be needed in his area? Charles is not looking for a subscription but an indication of interest - 'For it will be no trouble to me to throw by my important labours if the publick are not at least as willing to read as I to write'.
