Deeds (5) relating to the purchase of Myfyrian Isa in Llanidan by John Prichard of Dinam

Administrative / Biographical History

Once part of the possessions of John Owen of Presaddfed (barbarously spelt Preservedd in some of these papers) who died in 1754 after seriously impoverishing his estate by the expenses of more than one Parliamentary election. His heir-at-law was his brother Robert [sometimes referred to as Dr. Robert Owen of Devizes] who latterly lived at Ty Newydd in the parish of Llansilin, who just before his death (12 October 1758) demised the Presaddfed lands and his own property at Ty Newydd in trust to Thomas Kyffin of Maenan to arrange for their sale to the highest bidder, the proceeds to be primarily used to pay the debts both of John Owen and Robert Owen, and secondarily, to divide the surplus between R.O.'s heirs-at-law, viz., Emma, wife of William Roberts of Bodior, and the two daughters of Emma's sister Anne who had married John Fowles, Governor of Carlisle (Pedigrees, 96). Both Thomas Kyffin and Robert Owen died within a few days of the aforesaid trust being created; the former was now represented by his eldest son Thomas [the later Sir Thomas Kyffin of Maenan], who arranged a sale of the Presaddfed - Ty Newydd lands on 18-21 August 1760; John Prichard's bid of £700 was the highest for Myfyrian. Some time had to be spent in having the transaction regularised by the Court of Great Sessions, and particularly in satisfying the claims of Mary Williams, widow [of the Rev. William Williams, vicar of Caernarvon] to whose husband John Owen had mortgaged Bodwine and Myfyrian Isa on 28 January 1737-8 for a consideration of £1,600.
