Share Registers

Scope and Content

Registers of shareholders by class of share (Ordinary Shares, Preference Shares). The registers list the names and additions of the shareholders of the Company, together with the total number of shares they held, the share numbers, and the amount of subscriptions paid. Cross references to the Share Ledgers are provided. Share Registers were authenticated with the Company's Common Seal at the General Meetings of Shareholders.
The Share Registers were arranged by class of share.
Registers of Ordinary Shares list holders of Ordinary Shares 1846, 1869 and 1872 between the years 1846 and 1900. A second series of registers lists holders of 5% Preference Shares 1876, 3½ % Preference Shares 1896 and New (Ordinary) £10 Shares 1878 and 1879 between the years 1878 and 1899. There is, however, some overlap in the contents of the registers of Ordinary, Preference and New Shares. Cross references have been provided in the list, where possible
From 1900, the Share Registers combine Ordinary and Preference Shares. From 1923 the registers include dividend payments on each class of share, and are hence called Share and Dividends Registers. After the conversion and consolidation of shares into stock on 1 January 1933 the registers became known as Stock and Dividend Registers.
