Scope and Content

Various portraits of Edward Upward, as follows:

1. Colour photograph (285 x 200 mm) taken by Keith Langridge, 16 September 1993 (photographer identified and date indicated on the verso), with three black and white portraits (each 215 x 165 mm) taken March 1978 and received from Alan Ross. The three black and white photographs have been partially cut across the middle and repaired with clear tape (see identifying note by Upward written on stiff card recording that he was responsible for their accidental damage).

2. 5 black and white portraits (each 190 x 290 mm) taken by The Guardian newspaper in 1987. With original franked envelope front and compliment slip.

3. Black and white photograph (165 x 210 mm) of Upward with pen in hand. Stamped on the verso: 'Isle of Wight County Press Ltd'. With original envelope front annotated by Upward: 'photo of me at 90'.

4. Black and white photograph (155 x 200 mm, mounted on black card) of Upward at a book signing for The Spiral Ascent [1977]; two black and white contact sheets (both without date, one sheet stamped on the verso 'Mark Gerson'); colour photograph (195 x 130 mm) taken by Keith Langridge (1996); and two low quality versions (one colour, one black and white) of a photograph printed by a computer printer (no date, c 2000).

Note: There are two additional photographs (of Upward as a young boy, Kingswood Lodge, 1910) with the journal Add MS 89002/1/75.
