In the Cape Town Mail, 19 and 23 April 1853, there appeared a letter on 'The Transvaal Boers and Sechele', by 'Jno. Kotze', which alleged, inter alia, that Livingstone had supplied Sechele with 'firearms and ammunition'; in reply William Thompson published (26 April) an edited version of a manscript left with him by Livingstone in 1852, entitled 'The Story of the Black Pot, alias The Story of selling the gun', in which Livingstone wrote, "If you can prove that I either lent or sold or gave a gun or anything else but a black pot and a handful of salt to Secheli, I shall willingly leave the country". In his story, Livingstone relates how Sechele, on setting out to attack Kgakge had borrowed from Livingstone 'a black-metal pot to cook with'. Rumour subsequently converted the pot into a cannon.
