Letter

Scope and Content

From Otley to Mary Fletcher in Madeley. Last night brought confirmation of the report of the death of [John Fletcher who died on August 14th 1785 ]. They had heard a report to that effect on Tuesday and Ritchie immediately fell into prayer for the departed and his widow. She could hardly dare hope that the news was false and wished that she were at Madeley – many times she has considered setting off but on reflection thought that she had better wait for more news. Spiritual matters are discussed in detail.

They remained in suspense until yesterday when Miss Salmon went to Leeds and brought back a part of the account contained in the printed letter received by their Leeds friends the day before. The churches have suffered a terrible loss – Ritchie mourns for Mary Fletcher, for the people of Madeley and for all who knew ‘this bright, this shining light.’ Spiritual matters are further discussed in detail.

Ritchie cannot and does not expect a letter from Fletcher at this time, but perhaps Sally [Sarah Lawrance] could write with news of how she is and if Ritchie could be any use in Madeley.

Spiritual matters are further discussed in detail.

Mrs H. [Horner?] and Miss Marshall are not at home at present – they will deeply feel for Fletcher in her loss.
