Mediaeval Motte at Tal y Cafn

Scope and Content

The Motte was known as Bryn Castell on the west bank of the River Conwy at Tal y Cafn about 40 feet above the river. It is an oval mound of fine river gravel 335 feet in circumference at the base, 15 feet high summit and a depression of 50 feet by 30 feet on each side due to quarrying. There is no sign of a Bailey. In 1535 Fenton called it Bryn Maelgwyn or Bryn y Castell.
