Also includes letters from William Henderson and people at East India House, regarding his enforced two years' leave of absence due to the state of his mental health. Henderson writes to Mountstuart Elphinstone detailing his story and asks for his help in his appeal to return to India. Also includes letters from Lord Elphinstone (for example, Mss Eur F88/118/42), detailing the latest on an ongoing dispute between him and the Court of Directors, regarding his decision to move the seat of government from Madras to somewhere better suited to his health (a letter from B Edmonston, Mss Eur F88/118/24, provides information on the powers of a Governor when absent from the seat of government)
