Bundle of Papers re the Manchester School for the Deaf and Dumb

Scope and Content

The bundle contains circular letters from the honorary secretary of the Manchester School for the Deaf and Dumb to George Harry Grey (1765-1845), 6th Earl of Stamford, who was a governor of the school. Admission to the school was by election, governors and subscribers being allocated votes in proportion to their financial contribution to the school. Lord Stamford had seven votes. Appended to the letters are lists of applicants and of successful candidates at the previous election, extracts from the laws, annual reports and directions for voting. There is also a copy of an address to the governors appealing for funds for a new building (EGR4/2/9/3/4).
