'WH Smith and family went away this morning...they kept themselves to themselves a good deal'. 1886: Sec for War in Lord Salisbury's 2nd cabinet. 1887: succeeded Lord Salisbury as 1st Lord of the Treasury. 1891: AJ Balfour succeeded WH Smith, deceased as 1st Lord of the Treasury. 'That article in The 'Contemporary Review' about Bismarck seems interesting and likely to stir up a good deal of party spirit in Germany'. The Bismarckian ear closed with the death of Frederick III 15 Jun 1886. A struggle between Bismarck and William II developed immediately and ended with Bismarck's dismissal in Mar 1890.
