Born in Alice, South Africa, in1860 Thomas Bailey Saunders was the second son of Deputy-Inspector-General George Saunders, C.B. He translated many works including texts by Arthur Schopenhauer, Goethe, and produced other books. He was a major contributor to The Dictionary of National Biography. He married in 1887 the Contessa Elena Alberti di Poja, only child of the late Conte Gustavo Alberti di Poja, or Roverto, South Tirol. He died in 1928 in Eastbourne.
