Scope and Content

LETTER: T.W. Moore, Secretary, Imperial Merchant Service Guild, The Arcade, Lord St, Liverpool to Captain R. Jones thanking him for his renewal subscription. They have enrolled 145 new members during the year. A case has just arisen in connection with one of their members which is of vital importance to the Cloth generally. Acting on the instructions of his owners their member, the Captain of a steamer, signed a draft on an Australian bank for the sum of £3,000. Two or three days after this amount was received by the owner the latter went bankrupt. The master is now being sued for the recovery of the amount advanced, and from a legal point of view it is just a question whether the Master is not personally liable. If he was declared legally liable then all shipmasters remitting moneys home under similar conditions would be placing upon themselves a serious personal liability. It has been decided to defend the member concerned as the issues at stake are very grave. They hope that their action in the matter will add another to the many signal successes they have achieved. In the postscript he adds that he is enclosing a couple of application forms on the chance that some of this officers wish to become members.
