Cotton Industry Act 1959: Redundancy due to Re-equipment

Scope and Content

Correspondence between Amalgamation officials and Amalgamated Weavers' Association, Federation of Master Cotton Spinners Association and various employers over agreements for redundancy payments due to Cotton Industry Act 1959. The Act aimed to reduce surplus capacity in the cotton industry and encourage re-equipment and modernisation of remaining plant. Government assistance for such re-equipment was available only after agreement on redundancy pay for displaced operatives had been reached. The correspondence is concerned with clarification of the conditions under which such compensation was available.
