Alport

Scope and Content

Alport deeds, 1705-1778. Alport Lane was an extension of Deansgate, which at the beginning of the 18th century, extended only as far as present day Quay Street and Peter Street. On the eastern side was the old town of Alport; the western side was largely undeveloped, with fields running down to the River Irwell. In 1718, Joseph Byrom (1659-1733) purchased an extensive tract of land in this area, including some houses previously built on the site by former owner, Joseph Hooper.

Joseph Byrom was a successful silk mercer of such means that not only was he was able to sustain such a purchase in addition to his other acquisitions, but also a carriage and two horses, as mentioned in one of the drafts of his will in 1717. His son, Edward (1702-1760), was to build a residence on what is now Quay Street, and also, Manchester's first quay on the Irwell.
