Prayer Book Revision

Scope and Content

Most of the documents in this group derive directly from Frere's involvement in the revision of the Book of Common Prayer which resulted in the abortive Deposited Books of 1927 and 1928. Frere supported the earlier one but opposed the 1928 revision only to retract his opposition after it had been defeated in Parliament. In addition to the papers directly relevant to the revision controversy there are some papers relating to earlier attempts at liturgical reform, some of which involved Frere in a consultative capacity, and also a few papers concerned with the particular problem known as the ‘Epiclesis’ controversy. Apart from papers emanating from or pertaining to official bodies of the established church, the collection contains a number of printed pamphlets and broadsheets about the proposed revisions and also some of Frere's correspondence about the issues involved. Many of the printed pamphlets and volumes listed below are annotated in Frere's hand and some have stray items of correspondence inserted which have been left with the document concerned.
