Scope and Content

Commentary by an unidentified author on the Prima Pars, the Secunda Secundae and Tertia Pars of St. Thomas Aquinas' Summa Theologiae, written in two fine hands of the early-seventeenth century.
Most of the manuscript is written in a secretary hand, whilst two portions are written in a mixed hand (ff. 213-225 verso, 412-424 verso). The commentary may be an example of the manuscript text books supplied to university students during the early-seventeenth century, and perhaps related to other similar works published on the continent during the same century (not seen).

Custodial History

Signature of Tabitha Fletcher, probably an early owner, [17 cent., first ½] (ff. 96 verso, 329 verso, 546 verso); armorial bookplate and signature of Thomas Mostyn, 1744, 'no. 103', catalogue number '104' added above (inside front cover); shelf mark 'H b 2', [19 cent.] (front paste down); and '28' within round brackets, [19 cent.] (f. 1). The manuscript is listed as no. 29 (of the MSS Quarto, Octavo etc. series) in the Gloddaith library catalogues of 1692 and 1744 (see D. Huws, Medieval Welsh Manuscripts (Cardiff & Aberystwyth, 2000), p. 326); it is referred to as MS 104 in the Appendix to the Fourth Report of the Royal Commission on Historical Manuscripts (London, 1874), p. 351, and is possibly to be identified as part of lot 98, sold in the sale of Mostyn manuscripts at Sotheby's, London, 13 July 1920.
