University of Manchester Architecture & Planning Students Society Archive

Scope and Content

Extant records of the University of Manchester Architecture and Planning Students Society, which was active from 1953 to the mid-1960s.

The records comprise one minute book, covering 1957-63, and what appears to be a complete set of the Society's journal, 244.

Administrative / Biographical History

The University of Manchester Architecture and (Town) Planning Students Society was established in 1953. Its declared aims were:

"To further and promote the activities of and provide facilities for the students of the Manchester University Schools of Architecture and Town Planning."

Membership was open to students of these subjects at the University, The Society was headed by an executive committee, composed of the president, secretary and treasurer plus six other members. The Society held regular meetings and social events, and published a magazine 244. Its symbol was an acanthus leaf.

The Society appears to have been defunct by the mid-1960s. In 1967, a new society, the Manchester University Student Architects Group had been established, with largely the same remit as the Society.
