Scope and Content

From Wakefield, Yorkshire, to an unnamed person, advising her correspondent to look upon his/her recent unhappy romance as a trial set to test self-denial.

A continuation of the letter was written at Tewkesbury in Gloucestershire, describing her arrival in town and her feelings of peace through the grace of God - several lines of poetry re divine love are quoted.

During the coach journey she was struck with pity at the anguish of a convicted thief, who was being carried in chains on the coach box. It served to distract her mind from her own problems.

The reading of the one hundredth psalm at evening devotions affected her terribly. She feels that she is faced with the prospect of a long life full of sorrow, and asks for Godes mercy - several lines of poetry are quoted.
