Scope and Content

A comprehensive historical legal resource for the first 800 years of the whole common law world, this Library is the first release of what will become be a much larger collection of databases documenting the history of the Common Law from 1215-1914, including material from as many common law jurisdictions (to 1914) as are available.

The Catalogue provides links to other sites with information on the history of the common law. Law on Google translates searches over the Library into Google searches, and attempts to limit them to materials relevant to the history of the common law.

The databases in the Library are made available via CommonLII (Commonwealth Legal Information Institute). Most of the database are from the following Legal Information Institutes that cooperate with CommonLII to make the Library available: AsianLII; AustLII; BAILII; CanLII; CyLaw, HKLII; LII of India; NZLII; and PacLII. Digitisation assistance is also provided by IALS Digital.

The Library is being expanded with funding assistance from the Australian Research Council and eleven Australian universities, whose Chief Investigators also advise the project.
