The Kirklees collections include records for numerous local industries and businesses, including woollen, worsted and fancy cloth manufacturers and shoddy, mungo and rag merchants in the textile industry, as well as accountants, shovel makers, valve makers, shoemakers, land surveyors, auctioneers, maltsters, wire rope manufacturers, tanners and solicitors, and also iron and lead works, theatres, trade unions and mutual societies.

The Kirklees collections also cover the records of over thirty local branches of co-operative societies in the district, reflecting the rich history of this movement; records which represent the political, social, charitable, sporting and educational diversity of the area; records reflecting the strong musical heritage of the area; and family and estate records, including those of the Ramsdens of Byram and Longley, Beaumonts of Whitley, and the Thornhills of Fixby.
