The notebook contains chapter headings and the text of chapters 2-11 of the novel, some other leaves extracted from another notebook being in Add. 73349; see Add. 73307 for leaves giving chapter headings, one indicating that the title chosen by Chesterton was 'The adventurous Abbot Stephen'. Five other pages from the story are Add. 73248 A ff. 98v, 99v, 100v, 104v, 105v, and other fragments in Add. 73342 E. The text of the novel in this notebook, with that of the first and last leaves of those in Add. 73349 are published as 'The face of brass' in C.W., vol. 14, pp. 711-767.
