Correspondence

Scope and Content

The sub-fonds contains 1761 items of correspondence exchanged between 1933-1986, with approximately 700 different correspondents. The majority of correspondence belonged to Calvin Wells although there is a small amount which belonged to his wife Freddie, primarily from the period following her husband's death in 1978. In some instances Calvin or Freddie attached copies of their own letters which provide evidence of both sides of communication. Additional items in the sub-fonds include draft typescript or handwritten copies of articles, photographs (personal as well as photographic evidence of various archaeological specimens), pamphlets related to talks and lectures, and business cards of colleagues.

Arrangement

Calvin Wells' correspondence is arranged alphabetically by surname of correspondent or name of organisation where applicable. An additional series has been placed at the end of the sub-fonds for correspondents who have not been identified.
