Eastern Rengma Morung

Scope and Content

B&W photographic print. 'A Morung (bachelor's dormitory). Huge tassels of plant fibre hang from the beams, the crossed "house horns" symbolise increase of prosperity, and the central post is carved with conventionalised hornbills, symbolising success, with a lizard carved at the base. No Rengma ever kills lizard, because it is believed to give a soul water on the road to the Land of the Dead.'
